EARLY BEATLES / BRIAN ESPTEIN BUSINESS CARD

This is a very early Beatles / Brian Epstein business card. It is white with black text that reads "The Beatles / Business & Personal Manager: / Brian Epstein / 12-14 Whitechapel Liverpool 1 / Royal 7895." The story behind the writing on the back of the card - The Beatles were at a very early audition or show around 1962, and while another band was playing, this card was passed around in secret among The Beatles and Brian Epstein. One of them scribbled "CLAP EH ?" on the card, but Lennon wrote the letter 'R' over the letter 'L', changing it to read to "CRAP EH ?" This cannot be totally confirmed, but it sounds like a typical story of Lennon humour. The handwriting does resembles Lennon's 'R', but it also resembles Paul McCartney's 'R' as seen in his lyrics for "Paperback Writer" in 'Beatles Monthly Book' number 36 from July 1966.

Price - 850 English Pounds

JOHN LENNON'S 1970 BAG ONE LITHOGRAPHS

Complete set of fifteen lithographs, each measuring 51 x 37 cm (20 x 14.5 in). Eight are black & white: front piece, erotica, marriage, 'bed-in' & poem; seven are brown sepia, which are erotica. Together with it's original 'Bag One' cardboard folder and inner tray. The lithographs and tray are near mint. The cardboard folder is in very good condition. It has a watermark on the front and back of the right hand corner, a brown mark on the front and back of the top, and splits on the right and left sides. It contains the printing "Laurens a. daane n.v. Amsterdam, Holland."

Please note that this is not the 1970 hand-signed set, but it is a 1970 set, or 1970s set with the printed signature. This set apparently contradicts books which refer to the contents of each set. For example, in "Millers Rock & Pop Memorabilia" page 125, by Stephen Maycock, Sotheby's expert, the author mentions a total of fourteen images, which were the originals. The 1970 Holland set seemed to have been printed in black. However, the "Crommylynck Brothers" of Paris who were Picasso's personal print makers, did in fact produce two-proofed lithographs in brown sepia. Therefore this set cold be the printers proof set. See "John Lennon, One Day At A Time" by Anthony Fawcett, pages 167, 169, and 171.

Price - 1,500 English Pounds

BEATLES 1964 CABLEGRAM

This item is possibly one of the first ever historical documents relating to Beatles memorabilia and concerts. It is a 2-part cablegram sent via Western Union by Pat Boone to Brian Epstein, on June 27th, 1964 at 3:00 AM California time (see top right-hand corner of cablegram) to his then address, 20 Manchester Square, London W1. Pat Boone, filmed on a British television program called "The Popular Song," televised on April 14th, 2001, stated in an interview, that he was " dealing in Beatles memorabilia." The cablegram contains some very early and possibly unpublished information, relating to merchandising of Beatles memorabilia and the "1964 Las Vegas Concerts." It also mentions a post-concert party (which seems to tie in with Mark Lewisohn's book "The Complete Beatles Chronicle," pages 169-170), as well as portrait sales and organization of a USA national Beatles competition.

During this very early period, the American press were spelling the name of the Beatles wrongly, therefore notice "Beatles" misspelled as "Beattles." Other misspelled words on the cablegram, that were changed by hand at the time, are the words "London" and "Dollars," all of which add to the cablegram's authenticity and the period. The cablegram has a handwritten note "50 tickets" penned by Brian Epstein, after Epstein agreed to alot "50 tickets" for the American prize-winning kids. The size of each part of the 2-part cablegram is 21 x 15 cm (8 x 6 in). There is a staple mark on the top left of the cablegram, done during the period, so that the 2 parts could be kept together and not lost. There are also two very small tears to the top left and bottom right of the cablegrams.

Price - 2,000 English Pounds

BEATLES 1966 CABLEGRAM

This significant piece of Beatles memorabilia relates to their final historic concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on August 29th, 1966. The cablegram was sent to Brian Epstein, Nems Enterprises Ltd., Sutherland House, 5th floor, 5/6 Argyle St., W1, from Norman Weiss, executive of General Artists Corp., and who organized The Beatles' first American tour. It recommends a change of venue from the Cow Palace to Candlestick Park, because of a higher seating capacity resulting in greater financial benefit. It contains several hand-written notes penned by Epstein relating to radio interviews, figures, and locations. This cablegram became unknowingly unique as when sent, no one had any idea that this would relate to The Beatles' final concert, making this a historical piece of memorabilia for that reason alone.

Price - 4,000 English Pounds

RINGO STARR 1963 LETTER, ENVELOPE, AND PICTURE

Ringo Starr sent this letter to one of his fans in January 1963 (see postmark on envelope). He states his address at the time as "10 Admiral Grove." In it he refers to an enclosed photograph of himself, which the fan had specifically requested from him. He signed the photograph and wrote a dedication to her on the reverse, also apologizing for the delay in replying and mentioning that "you know how we don't have much time." There is an acknowledgement that he thought "her Beatles books were fab." The photograph shows Ringo without the "Beatles Haircut" and a cigarette which Dot has specifically requested. Also, it is clear from the tone of the letter that there is a personal connection between Ringo and Dot. He closes in signing the letter.

This item is an example of one of the rare moments when Ringo put pen to paper, as he was not known for his letter writing. Because of this, letters from him do not come up for sale that often. The accompanying envelope bears a 3d stamp and postmark reading "Liverpool, 5.45pm, 18th January 1963" and is hand-printed by Ringo with the name and address.

Price - 2,500 English Pounds

BEATLES HAMBURG DAYS ALARM CLOCK

Brian Epstein gave this alarm clock to Pete Best as a Christmas gift in 1961. It comes with Brian Epstein's personal card (front and back shown above) penned in his own handwriting with the words "Pete - my little bit to get you all on in time, merry xmas," a message giving some indication of Pete's tendency towards lateness, alledgedly one of the traits which led to his departure in August 1962.

Pete used this clock in Hamburg, Germany in 1962. Pete has confirmed this directly, that only four of these clocks were bought by Epstein, for each member of The Beatles. The whereabouts of the other three clocks is not known, or even if they still exist. Therefore, this makes this item a historical and unique piece of memorabilia relating to the early days of The Beatles. The clock most probably came from the Epstein family's furniture store in Liverpool.

Price - 3,000 English Pounds

RINGO STARR'S ARMY STYLE HAT

It was sent and signed by Norman Weiss, an executive of the prestigious American agency General Artists Corporation, and a significant contact during The Beatles' first visit to America in Februay 1964. He also organized The Beatles' first American tour on behalf of GAC, and he advised Brian Epstein "that he should only accept bookings for large arenas such as stadiums and should ask for $25,000 in advance, plus a percentage of the gate receipts," as quoted in Bill Harry's book "The Ultimate Beatles Encyclopedia," page 687. The letter is typed on original General Artists Corporation letterhead. The color brochure for the cruise contains hand-written booking dates, along with "reserved for Beatles Sept 10 & 11," It is signed Jim Atkins including the boat phone number.

ORIGINAL PLANS FOR JOHN LENNON'S TITTENHURST STUDIO

A full set of twelve 33" x 29" architectural plans and detailed drawings for John Lennon's Ascot Sound Studios at his "Tittenhurst" home in Ascot. The plans reveal intricate details of the control room, studio, sound-proof doors, and much more, and also contain names, addresses and telephone numbers of the architect and acoustic consultant. The hand-penned title "For John Lennon" is featured throughout the plans. The plans are from September-December 1969, and are most likely the only set ever produced. They are housed in an original binder.

John and Yoko moved into Tittenhurst in August 1969, and the studio was built soon after this. Among other things, this is the studio where Lennon recorded his famous 'Imagine' album in 1971. The film 'Gimme Some Truth' documents the recording of this album, and it features several scenes of the studio.

After the Lennon's moved permanently to the United States in 1973, Ringo Starr bought the property and renamed the studio Startling Studio, making it available for public hire. Ringo sold the property in 1979 to Sheikh Zayed bin al-Nalyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh had the entire property renovated, and every room in the house including the recording studio was gutted and rebuilt.

MARC BOLAN HANDWRITTEN POEM

This is a two page handwritten poem by Marc Bolan. Bolan's idiosyncratic style of handwriting is very obvious in this mystical poem. It features his passion with the occult, and spelling errors hint of his dyslexic nature. It reads:

When each rose blazed the dragon from beltanes past closed its wing around the children of the nite. The wizards & elvs - we call (with our) magick spells, dance in day and in nite rest in within his arms. Marc for Stuart.

On the top left corner of page one, Bolan has drawn a picture of a flower, and there are also other words that have been scratched out. On the reverse of page one, Bolan has drawn a head and shoulders of a wizard with the words "Marc the spell master" crossed out.
